How to Rank in the Google Map Pack in Oshawa
September 9, 20263 min read
What decides the three map results in Oshawa searches, which of it you control, and the order to work in to get your business into the pack.
The map pack is the block of three businesses with a map that appears above the normal results for searches like "auto repair Oshawa" or "dentist near me". For local searches it takes most of the clicks. Getting into it is a different job from ranking a web page.
The three things Google is weighing
Proximity. How close the business is to the person searching, or to the centre of the area they named. You cannot change your address, but you can stop pretending to be somewhere you are not — a fake address is the one mistake that gets a profile suspended.
Prominence. How well known the business appears to be: review count and recency, mentions on other sites, and how established the web presence is.
Relevance. How well the profile and website match what was typed. This is the part you control almost completely, and the part most Oshawa businesses leave half-finished.
Work the relevance side first
- Primary category. Pick the single most accurate one. "Auto Repair Shop" and "Car Repair and Maintenance Service" are not interchangeable. Secondary categories should describe what you really do, not everything you could.
- Services list. Add every service as its own entry with a real description. Empty service lists are extremely common and cost nothing to fix.
- Business description. Say what you do and where, in normal sentences.
- Hours, including holidays. Wrong hours produce one-star reviews.
- Photos. Your own, geotagged by the phone that took them, added regularly. Stock photography does nothing.
- Products or menu, where the category supports it.
The website still matters
The profile does not rank in isolation. Google reads the site it points to. If the profile says "brake repair in Oshawa" and the site has one page titled "Services", the association is weak. A dedicated page for the service, naming Oshawa in the title, the heading and the copy, strengthens it — and it is the page you will link from the profile.
Check that:
- The site's phone number matches the profile exactly, in text (not only in an image).
- The address, when you have a storefront, appears in the footer of every page.
- There is LocalBusiness structured data with the same name, address and phone.
- The site is fast on a phone. Map pack traffic is overwhelmingly mobile.
Reviews are the lever most people leave alone
Review count, review recency and the words inside reviews all feed prominence and relevance. A review that says "replaced the water heater in our Oshawa house the same day" is worth more than five that say "great service". Asking properly is a process, not a favour — that is how many Google reviews you need in Durham, how to ask, and how to reply.
How to tell whether it is working
Do not judge from your own phone. Your results are personalised and your location is the shop. Instead:
- Watch the Google Business Profile performance report: searches, views, calls, direction requests, month over month.
- Watch calls and form fills, not rankings.
- Check the pack from a few real customer locations — north Oshawa, downtown, Courtice — rather than a single point.
Rankings in the pack legitimately differ street by street. A business that appears first downtown and fourth in north Oshawa is normal, not broken.
Realistic timelines
Profile fixes can show within days. Review velocity and site changes take weeks. Displacing an established competitor with 300 reviews takes longer than one quarter, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. If a competitor with an obviously worse website is ahead of you, the reasons are usually the ones in why your Whitby competitor outranks you with a worse website.
Check your own site first
Before you change anything, see what a search engine actually sees on your pages. Run a free scan at seo4i.com — it takes about a minute and returns the same technical checks we use on client sites, plus a plain-English list of what to fix first. Plans and limits are on the pricing page.
